How to Find the Right Type of SUV
With so many SUVs available, it can be overwhelming for the average buyer to choose the right one for their driving needs. We’ll explain what kind of SUV would suit you best so that you can make an informed buying decision. From there, you can focus on selecting the features (such as color, seats, and transmission) that bring your SUV to life.
X-Small SUVs
You may have heard of X-small SUVs being referred to as subcompact SUVs. These SUVs are really nothing more than higher-riding hatchbacks derived from car platforms with some added off-roading abilities. You may not be able to go hard-core trailblazing in these vehicles, but they can handle a dirt road here and there. As for looks, most subcompact SUVs have boxier proportions than other vehicles in the hatchback segment. The upside is that these X-small SUVs are inherently practical, and a higher ride height means it’s quite easy to get in and out of them. Most models offer comfortable seating, although the rear seat can be cramped if the folks in front are on the larger side.
Small 3-Row SUV
Small 3-row SUVs are a great choice for families with growing kids. You can fit seven passengers (a mix of adults and children), have room for luggage, and get decent gas mileage. But don’t expect a small 3-row SUV to be a good fit for off-roading.
Midsize SUVs
If you only want the best of what SUVs have to offer, you’ll find it in this group. Midsize SUVs deliver in almost every way that families care about. This type of vehicle is the all-around sweet spot if you need lots of passenger space and cargo room, but you don’t want to deal with the hassle of a traditional SUV. Depending on which one you choose, it can also serve as a road-trip sidekick or an off-roading buddy.
Large SUVs
Huge passenger capacity, cavernous cargo space, and enormous towing capacities are three of the biggest boons of today’s large SUVs. In exchange, owners must deal with truck-like dimensions and handling and very low fuel economy. Still, a good choice if you haul or tow heavy loads and go off-roading often.
